Trees for Climate
Greenwood is joining the other 14 Community Forests across England in planting over 6000 cumulative hectares of "climate combatting” woodland by 2025, making Trees for Climate one of the biggest environmental regeneration initiatives the UK has seen. Trees for Climate is part of the national government-led Nature for Climate project .
Once planted, the trees will eventually store over 1,200,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide, the equivalent of over 45,000 trans-Atlantic flights and contributing to meeting the government's net zero by 2050 target. The project will also reduce flood risk, increase sustainable UK grown timber, provide more places for nature and biodiversity to thrive, and increase local access to woodland. The funding will also create new jobs and secure existing ones within the forestry and environmental sector, helping to boost local economies as part of a green recovery.
Are you a landowner?
Are you a landowner, farmer or school with land suitable for tree planting? The Community Forest Landowner Grant Scheme offers flexible and competitive grants, is versatile and can support schemes from 0.1ha up to full woodland creation of several hectares. Year 4 planting
We have planted 169 ha across 62 schemes the length and breadth of the county. This has included community planting projects as well as privately owned and would not have been possible without the help of the volunteers who turned up with a smile on their face irrespective of the weather.
Projects included
- Coach Wood Green at Shireoaks
- Warsop Vale
- Coxmoor
- Gunthorpe
- And phase two of Willey Wood Farm which has now been re-named Monarch Wood.
Year 3 planting
In year three of the project we planted 44 ha in 36 schemes ranging from hedges to community woodlands. Residents from school children to NHS staff helped us to plant trees and even the Lord Lieutenant for Nottinghamshire joined in and planted an oak seedling grown from an acorn from the Major Oak! Our running total of hectares planted is now a massive 132 ha!
- Willey Wood Farm, Newthorpe, where nearly 9,000 trees were planted on this recently acquired site
- Calverton former Pitch and Putt site, where schools and local residents planted 750 trees
- Floral Media where over 45 volunteers planted 1800 trees to create a new woodland
- Little John Drive, Mansfield where local residents showed their love for trees on Valentine's Day
Year 2 planting
During year 2 we completed 7 schemes including 1.8km of new hedgerows and 60 hectares of new woodlands in the following locations:
- Rufford No3 pit tip near Rainworth - 18,000 trees were planted during December 2021
- Bestwood Country Park - we invited park users and schools to plant trees at our community tree planting days
- Land at Daneshill Road, Nr Retford - nearly 8 hectares has been planted
- Vicardale, with our partners Sherwood Forest Trust.
Year 1 planting
During the first year of the project in 2020/21 we planted 4.9 hectares of new woodland at Bentinck South Pit Tip, near Kirkby-in-Ashfield.
