Skylarks nest on the spoil tip and other residents include foxes, owls, meadow pipits and lapwings. Kings Mill is a large reservoir and area of natural beauty on the Sutton-in-Ashfield and Mansfield border. A medieval mill pond expanded in the 1830s it acted as a head of water for a dozen mills along the River Maun, along with water meadows several miles away. It is now a spectacular wildfowl sanctuary with a pleasant 1.5 mile walk around the perimeter. The site provides a habitat for a wide range of fascinating wildlife, and is ideal for peaceful walks, nature study and sailing on the reservoir itself. The area is a birdwatchers paradise being abundant with a wide variety of land and water species.

The Teversal Trails network of footpaths, cycle ways and horse trails were created on former railway track beds, which once served the collieries in the area. Take one of the many tranquil walks and enjoy the abundant wildlife to be found here. Part of the network has been designated a Local Nature Reserve due to its valuable flora, fauna and geology.
